A DAY TRIP TO THE DALI MUSEUM IN FIGURES

The Salvador Dalí Museum is located in the small picturesque town of Figueres, around 80 miles north-east of Barcelona. With the largest collection of Dalí’s art in the world, the museum is essential for art-lovers and fans of the moustachioed master of surrealism.

For those visiting Barcelona, a day trip to Figueres is a great way to experience the tranquil beauty of Catalonia. While it’s not the easiest place to get to, it’s well worth the effort! We’ve broken down the different travel options, so can choose the one that suits you best.

By train

Perhaps the quickest and easiest option, a high speed train, known as the AVE (pronounced av-aay) can whisk you to Figueres in just under an hour. Trains run from Barcelona’s Sants station to Figueres’ Vilafant station. You’ll find the timetable here.

By coach

A more comfortable but slightly longer journey, coaches leave from Barcelona Nord coach station and will drop you at the door of the museum. The three-hour journey time might be slightly off-putting but you’ll travel in comfort, with air-conditioning and modern facilities. Plus, with views of the medieval town of Girona (a location shoot for Game of Thrones) you’ll have plenty of beautiful landscapes and architecture to take in along the way. You’ll find the timetable here.

By car

Visitors to Barcelona are spoilt for choice when it comes to car hire companies. Sixt, Avis, Europcar, Quadis and Meridiana are just some of the car rental companies that you’ll find in and around Barcelona Sants train station.

Figueres is a ninety minute drive away from Barcelona. There are tolls along the way, so expect to pay a little extra if you decide to take this option.

Where to eat

9 Suprem

Professional service, exceptional food and fantastic value for money make 9 Suprem an essential lunch stop when visiting Figueres.

Calid Cafe

A small, busy cafe serving fantastic food made with fresh, locally sourced ingredients, Calid Cafe is popular with locals and tourists alike. Book in advance or arrive early to avoid the wait.

Aroma Cafe

A charming little cafe in the centre of town, Aroma Cafe serves a great lunchtime buffet, with a wide range of snacks (including vegetarian and vegan options). Don’t miss their dangerously tasty cakes.

Other Places to See

Castell de Sant Ferran

A 15 minute walk up the hill beside the Dalí museum is a monumental medieval fortress – one of the largest in Europe. A must-see for history buffs.

Museu de la Tecnica de l’Emporda

A small museum with an incredible collection of technological gadgets and gizmos that will be of interest to curious minds of all ages.
